An interdisciplinary field of research in continuous evolution
In January 2009, INSERM established UMR 977 following exceptional evaluations (A+) by AERES of two pioneering research teams. Among these was the "Active Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering" INSERM team led by Dr. Nadia Benkirane-Jessel, which would become the cornerstone of our future development.
Building on our initial success, we transformed our research vision during the unit's renewal. The unit was restructured around the "Active Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering" team's groundbreaking work, adopting a new identity that better reflected our scientific trajectory: "Osteoarticular and Dental Regenerative Nanomedicine" INSERM team. This evolution marked our deep commitment to smart hybrid materials and regenerative nanomedicine, with research spanning tooth engineering, bone repair, bone metastasis and cartilage regeneration.
January 2018 brought a significant transformation with the creation of UMR 1260 INSERM-UNISTRA under the direction of Dr. Nadia Benkirane-Jessel. Two complementary research themes joined forces, enriching our expertise with new dimensions in therapeutic pharmacology and vascular regeneration. This strategic alliance opened promising avenues for research in vascular protection in health and disease. The unit operated as a unified INSERM team "Regenerative Nanomedicine" structured around two complementary research themes working in synergy on three validated programs approved by INSERM and the University of Strasbourg.
Our INSERM-UNISTRA unit's renewal in 2024 marked another milestone, with members from the IRFAC of the HERIIT Group "Heterogeneity, Resistance, Inflammation and Therapeutic Innovations" joining our research community, further strengthening our capacity for innovation. This renewal was accompanied by an outstanding evaluation from the University of Strasbourg, INSERM and HCERES, which recognized excellence across all assessment categories: scientific production, funding capacity, technological innovation and the excellence of our scientific project. The evaluators particularly emphasized our innovation in health technology, affirming the leadership position of our unit in regenerative medicine research.
